You can choose to have rounded, inset, or beveled corners.

Use the Cap buttons to set the style of the ends.

Method 3: Using the Offset Path Effect

Click OK to apply the effect. 

You will see a new outline around the object.

Next, select each path and use the Swatches or Color Panel to add different colors to each path.
